Apple has announced a new promotional offer for students, promising several benefits upon the purchase of select Mac and iPad models through the Apple Store. Called Back to School, the program offers an attractive deal this year - a free pair of AirPods along with these devices.
Starting today, the new discount program by Apple will be applicable for students, parents and school faculty in the US. It will offer free AirPods to those who buy select Mac and iPad models under Apple's education pricing. In addition, the buyers will get 20 per cent off on AppleCare+.
AirPods will be the standard offering under the deal. Buyers can pay an extra amount to get AirPods Pro instead. Among the Mac lineup, the offer will be applicable on iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. As for iPads, free AirPods will be offered on the purchase of iPad Pro and iPad Air under the program.
Qualifying students and educators can receive free second-generation AirPods with a wired charging case with the purchase of a new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, iMac Pro, iPad Pro, or iPad Air. The student discount on the Mac and iPad lineup under the Back to School program further sweetens the deal.

Other than the AirPods and the AppleCare+ benefit, there are regular Apple deals like 3 free months of Apple Music, Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade and free engraving on Apple Pencil. The promotional offers can be availed by qualifying applicants in the US till September 27.
Apple says that the Apple Education Pricing on AppleCare+ is only available during the promotional period and that it 'cannot be combined with non-promotional Apple Education Pricing.'
As noted by 9to5Mac in a report, Apple usually rolls out such Back to School promotions in other international markets too. As for India, students, parents, teachers and staff can avail discounts on new Mac and iPad models under Apple's education pricing right now. It is not clear if the free AirPods offer will be rolled out on Apple Store India any time soon.
Another such promotion by Apple offers discounted prices on AppleCare Plus prices for Macs. In India, buyers of Macs can avail AppleCare+ for a price of Rs 18,900, down from the earlier price of Rs 25,900. You can read all about the ongoing discount here.

Although this is currently limited to the US Apple Store for Education, Apple typically rolls out identical Back to School promotions in other regions like the UK a few weeks after the US campaign begins.
This year, the Back to School offer applies to purchases of any iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air including build-to-order options. On the iPad front, only purchases of iPad Pro and iPad Air are eligible.

Across both iPad and Mac deals, you are saving a total of $159 … the price of the standard second-generation AirPods with wired charging case. You can choose to get the AirPods with wireless charging case for an additional $40, or upgrade to AirPods Pro for $90 extra.
In all cases, students are saving $159 compared to buying the products from the Apple Store individually. However, note that you are also benefiting from the 5-10% student discount on the price of the Mac and iPad too.
For instance, the student price of an M1 MacBook Air is $899. For the duration of the Back to School promotion, students can get both the MacBook Air and second-generation AirPods for $899. It’s a decent offer.

That being said, it probably makes sense to look elsewhere for the best deal. The second-generation AirPods are several years old at this point, with rumors of a model redesign coming later this year, and are regularly discounted at third-party retailers. You also may be able to find standalone discounts on M1 Macs.
