AOL released an all-new AIM for the Macintosh on September 29, 2008 and the final build on December 15, 2008. The redesigned AIM for Mac is a full universal binary Cocoa API application that supports both Tiger and Leopard — Mac OS X 10.4.8 (and above) or Mac OS X 10.5.3 (and above). This one worked correctly with the initial Leopard release, even when iChat didn't work properly. It may be several years old (2001?) but it's a good basic client.
Having used the version 6.x Windows client, I think I prefer the older Mac client as it can be removed quickly and there won't be many other, associated AOL bits and pieces which refuse to go away.

I prefer Adium or iChat over this client--it's very ugly (not Mac-like) and dated.

The only downside to AIM is that profiles are public for anyone to see. The company themselves state that profiles are available for media and marketing purposes, compromising the security of users.

Similarly, users can add others to their friend list without requesting approval beforehand. This enables strangers to see if someone is online, read their status, and have access to their profile. AIM insist that personal information is never compromised, but this poses a threat to users who don’t want their profile to be openly accessible.
